– 2018 –
It’s January 2018 and I’m 4 months into a 6 month sabbatical. This period is all about a much needed mental reset and after a 2 month trip with my van in Scotland followed by another roadtrip in Spain, I’m ready to start the last journey of my leave before heading back to work… A 2 month trip covering Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
The only certainties are my flights from Brussels to Phnom Penh and from Ho Chi Minh back to Brussels. Other than that, nothing is planned and the only goal is to explore the area as free as possible and with an open mind, to fully submerge myself into an unknown culture, experience new things, go back to basics, witness differences and similarities compared to Belgium and on the way try to figure out which direction I want to go once I get back.
As a landscape photographer, I do have one major goal in mind… To broaden my horizon and focus rather on humans and human behaviour instead of staying in my comfort zone of shooting landscapes. I’ve always been hesitant to photograph people, mainly because it feels like intruding into someone’s personal space which – quite frankly – intimidates me.
– 2024 –
6 years later and I realize that I have only shared a few images of this trip. My social media accounts are mainly centered around my landscape photography and I’ve never really found a way to decently integrate these – rather different – images. And yet… I may be biased but I still really love them and consider them to be among the best I’ve made. So, when I launch my website in the end of 2023, I quickly realize that this would be the perfect medium to dedicate some space to more project-oriented series. And what better way to kick off the series with some images that I deeply enjoyed taking, right?
Below you can find a set of my favorite images of the trip, some of them never shared before. I thoroughly hope that you’ll enjoy them.
Please feel free to share your thoughts with me!
